About 4 A.M. on May 17,1919,City Marshall Benjamin Brashears responded to a burglary call in the business district of Panama City in LeFlore County. A local merchant named Frank Massey was also called and told that someone was trying to burglarize his store. Massey armed himself with a shotgun and went to his store. Seeing a shadowy figure near his store, Massey fired, fatally injuring Marshal Brashears, having mistaken him for the burglar. Marshal Brashears is memorialized at Panel: 15-W: 6 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC and on the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial. (Contributed by George Bacon.)
