Charles grew up in Oakland and lived there all of his life, until he enlisted in the Marines 5 October 1968, at the Oakland Recruiting Office.
Charles arrived in Vietnam 4 July 1969 and was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was on a platoon size mine sweep near the vicinity of Thon Phuoc Hung and 8 kilometers west of Danang City when he was wounded 12 August.
Charles was med-evac to the First Medical Battalion where he died the following day, as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.
Charles was single and died 11 days before his 20th birthday.
Survived by his mother, Linda M Velasquez of 3862 High St, Oakland, CA and his; Raymond J Velasquez of 1100 Central Blvd, Hayward, CA.
