A Camp Pendleton Marine was killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced today. Lance Cpl. Ardenjoseph A. Buenagua, 19, of San Jose, died Nov. 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, according to the Department of Defense. Buenagua was with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division of the Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today (Nov. 29, 2010) issued the following statement regarding the death of Lance Cpl. Ardenjoseph A. Buenagua of San Jose:

"The death of Lance Corporal Ardenjoseph Buenagua is a tragedy for our state, nation and armed forces. This brave Marine gave his life in service of our country, and his sacrifice will always be remembered. On behalf of all Californians, Maria and I extend our deepest condolences to Ardenjoseph's family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Buenagua, 19, died November 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA. In honor of Lance Cpl. Buenagua, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

His body arrived at the San Jose Mineta International Airport on December 1, 2010 at 1400 hours. Burial on December 4, 2010 at Golden Gate National Cemetery, 1300 Sneath Lane, San Bruno, CA 94066.
