Mark Raeburn Andrews, from Cincinnatti, Ohio died in a tragic plane crash.

He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Raeburn & Ruth Andrews. He also left behind two sisters. One of them was Becky Andrews Reed.

He was an offensive lineman, #61, for the Marshall University Football Team.

He was best friends with Jack Repasy and Bobby Harris. They were inseparable in life and ironically, they lost their lives together. A funeral for the three boys was held at Cincinnati Moeller. The families have a mass said each year on Nov. 14 for their lost sons.

He was one of 75 people who were killed in a plane crash on a rainy hillside in Wayne County, West Virginia. It was the worst single air tragedy in NCAA sports history. Among the losses were nearly the entire Marshall University football team, coaches, flight crew, numerous fans, and supporters. The event marked a boundary by which an entire community would forever measure time... before or after "The Crash".

A fountain bearing the inscription: "They shall live on in the hearts of their families and friends forever and this memorial records their loss to the university and to the community." was erected in the plaza at the center of the school. Each year on the anniversary of that fateful day, a memorial service is held, which includes the traditional laying of the wreath. At the end of the ceremony the water is turned off and remains off until the first day of spring football practice the following year.

A monument has also been erected in memory of these victims at Spring Hill Cemetery.

God bless those whose lives were lost on that evening; We honor those men and women who made a mark on the hearts of a school, a community and a nation.

In memory of Mark Andrews, Jack Repasy and Bob Harris.

Mark was my brother, and he was best friends with Jack and Bob. They played football together at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, and then went to Marshall together. They seemed to have it all. I was a freshman at Ohio State when they died, and on the radio James Taylor's song "Fire and Rain" played often. It always made me think of Mark, who died in fire and rain. A few weeks after the crash, we studied this poem in my English class (a strange coincidence). It was by A. E. Housman:

TO AN ATHLETE DYING YOUNG

THE time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears:
Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl's.

God bless your loving family and friends always.
