Tailor. Son of Jonathan and Huldah (Massey) Alger.

From his obituary in the Fitchburg Sentinel April 1, 1899:

His early life was passed in Winchendon. His first business was of a custom tailor, which he carried on in Baldwinville, Athol and East Templeton. He came to Gardner 37 years ago and carried on his trade here. He afterward built the Alger block in West Gardner, and with his son, J. L. Alger, Jr., opened a clothing and furnishing store.
