Berton E. Abare, 83, a resident of St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena, formerly of Malone, died Thursday April 9, 2009 at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Abare owned and operated a dairy farm on McCabe Road and was a local cattle dealer. He owned and operated Judy's Mountain View Inn with his wife from 1990 to 1993.

Born June 8, 1925, in Burke, son of Samuel and Elsie Garrow Abare, he attended local schools.

He married Rose LaFave on April 24, 1944. The marriage ended in divorce.

He married Judy Marshall on Aug. 28, 1972, in Malone. The marriage ended in divorce. Both wives survive.

He enjoyed playing cards and solving puzzles.

Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Jackie and Jim Hodapp, Eaton, Ohio, Mae and Joel LaPlante, Chateaugay, Judy and Dick Fountain, Melbourne, Fla., Charlene and Darrel Bilow, Moira, and Tracy Bassett, Mountain View; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Judy and Rick Cunningham, Westville, and Rose and Steve Marlowe, Malone; a stepson and his wife, Ted and Ann Zerniak, Malone; a sister-in-law, Norma Abare, Malone; 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Abare, and a grandson died before him.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bruso-Desnoyers Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
