Rosie Bell Ake was Loyd's mother. He enlisted in the U. S. Army January 21, 1943 and after training at Camp Rucker, Alabama, was sent to San Luis Obispo, California, then to Camp Buckner, North Carolina and in May 1944 was sent to England as a member of the 35th Division, 137th Infantry Regiment, Company D. General Eisenhower was impressed and quickly transferred the 35th from the Third Army and attached the division to General Bradley's 1st Army in Normandy, France. Loyd was wounded in August, 1944, and after healing was assigned to XX Corps in General Patton's Third Army. Loyd was killed in action about a month later. Decorations and awards: Expert Marksmanship Medal and the Purple Heart. Military ID# 38396277
