British Naval Officer. Quartermaster of the HMS Bounty. He stayed loyal to Commander Bligh during the mutiny on April 28, 1789, and joined him in being put off the ship. Four days after they were set adrift, Bligh's party landed on Tofua, one of the Tonga Islands, for badly needed provisions. They were attacked by hostile natives, and while the rest of the crew escaped Norton was overpowered and beaten to death with rocks. Bligh later told a relative that Norton's death was "a fortunate circumstance" because his obesity would have hindered and possibly doomed their long voyage in a shallow, overcrowded boat. The place where Norton was killed became known to sailors as "Murderers' Cove"; it is now called "Mutiny on the Bounty Beach".
