Mutineer. Able-bodied Seaman, tailor, and cook's assistant on the HMS Bounty. During the ship's five-month stay in Tahiti (1788-89), Commander William Bligh had Muspratt flogged on three occasions for desertion; he received a total of 60 lashes, giving him ample motivation to join in the mutiny on April 28, 1789. In 1791 he was captured in Tahiti by a search party from the HMS Pandora. He survived the sinking of that ship in August and was returned to England, where a court-martial found him guilty and condemned him to death. There was conflicting testimony about Muspratt's role in the mutiny, however, and in 1793 his conviction was overturned on appeal. Muspratt was the only Bounty mutineer to be acquitted of his crime and allowed to live as a free man in England. Amazingly, he went back to the Navy, and died while serving on the HMS Belleraphon.
