Memorial Site. During the fall of the short-lived Paris Commune, known as "Bloody Week" (May 21 to 28, 1871), Pere Lachaise Cemetery saw bitter fighting between outnumbered communards and troops of the National Assembly's Versailles Army, who secured the area on May 27. The following day 147 communards were lined up against a cemetery wall and shot, without trial, and their bodies buried in a nearby mass grave. Although thousands more rebels were summarily executed throughout Paris, this event came to symbolize the ferocity of the government's reprisals. Since then the Communards' Wall at Pere Lachaise has served as a shrine to France's political left and annual demonstrations have been held there.
