Consort Queen of France. Wife of Henry II and grandson of Lorenzo the Magnificent and better known as the Queen Mother, she was the parent of three French sovereigns, such as Francis II (1559-1560), Charles IX (1560-1574), Henry III (1574-1589). She was considered a woman of strong temperament and considerable political acumen, so as to effect for a long time the historical events that marked the political life of France even after the death of her husband. The cultural level of Catherine de Medici, according to historians, was far above the average among aristocrats. In fact, she knew several languages including English, Latin and Greek, as well as obviously Italian and French, and was also a protector of the arts and literature. After the premature death of her son François II she became Regent (1560-1563). To her is attributed the responsibility for the Massacre of the Night of San Bartolomeo or slaughter of the Huguenots.
