Staff Sergeant Michael Wayne Schafer Fredericksburg, VA, formerly of Spring Hill, FL, age 25 passed away during combat in Afghanistan. After graduating from Springstead High School in 1998, he enlisted in the Army in January of 1999. He did basic training and airborne school in Fort Benning, Georgia, then was in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was currently serving with Chosen Company 2/503rd and 173rd Airborne Division in Vicenza, Italy.

He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Dixie Forbes. Survivors include his wife, Danielle and son, Devin Daye Schafer of Fredericksburg, VA; 2 brothers, Timothy Barr of Spring Hill, FL, Mark Schafer Jr. of Williamsburg, VA; sister, Sarah Schafer of Williamsburg, VA; mother & husband, Karen & Daniel Barr of Spring Hill, FL; father, Mark Schafer of VA; mother-in-law, Diane Huntley of Fredericksburg, VA; brother-in-law, Michael Huntley of Fredericksburg, VA; sister-in-law, Jennifer Hosford of Michigan; maternal grandfather, Ronald Forbes of Spring Hill, Florida; paternal grandparents, Ed & Toni Schafer of Crown Point; Standish & Loretta (nee Geisen) Barr of Spring Hill, FL; maternal great grandmother Inez Rose of Hobart; paternal great grandfather, Howard Barr of Crown Point; countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Pastor Raymond Rouse officiated. Full Military Honors were conducted at Florida Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
