Senior Airman Ashton L. M. Goodman, 21, of Indianapolis. Ashton loved animals of all kinds especially frogs, cats and parrots. She worked at a pet store during high school and volunteered at the Indianapolis Zoo. She hoped to one day be a veterinarian or biologist. She graduated from Warren Central High School in 2006 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in July, becoming the third generation female in her family to serve in the AF. Ashton was stationed at Pope AFB in North Carolina for most of her career. She volunteered for a tour of duty in Iraq and was currently serving in Afghanistan, assigned to the 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron, based at Pope. Ashton was energetic and happy most of the time, she worked hard and played hard. Her duties were to drive military vehicles, the bigger the better. Broken nails, grime, sweat, these never bothered her, what did was anyone mean to animals. Ashton was part of the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team and as a team member, she often found herself in the role of mentor to Afghanistan women. Weekly meeting were held and she was able to work with the women to advanced the economic and social development of the women in Panjshir. In May she drove up steep hills to deliver much-needed food and house supplies to more than 100 poor women. Ashton stated she liked the intricate way that the world is precariously balanced. She died near Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device. She is the first Pope Air Force Base female and the first member of the 43rd Airlift Wing to die in Iraq or Afghanistan. my original bio written by Sue.
