Helmuth Schimmelpfennig was born June 17, 1858 at Bottenhagen, Germany, the son of Wilhelm "William" and Johanna (Ludwig) Schimmelpfennig. He emigrated to the United States in 1881 and settled near Brownton, Minnesota. The following year he arranged for his parents to join him.

On May 6, 1884, he married Augusta Genz at Brownton. Helmuth and Augusta had six children; sons Herman and Albert, and daughters Amanda, Alma, Elizabeth and Martha. Elizabeth and Martha died as infants.

Helmuth was a farmer and a carpenter, living on their farm 2 1/2 miles west of Brownton until moving into Brownton.

His obituary says he had always enjoyed good health, but he suffered a stroke on May 15th and died three days later.

He was survived by his wife, sons Herman and Albert, and daughters, Amanda Gehrke and Alma Zander.
