Mathias Sauer was born June 24, 1818 in Germany. He married Elizabeth Wieland May 4, 1856 in Germany. Mathias and Elizabeth had 8 children:
George
Gertrude (died as an infant)
Peter
Margaret
Joseph M
Elizabeth
John M
Frank

The family came to America and settled in Johnstown, Pennsylvania where most of their children were born. Eventually they moved to the Stearns County, Minnesota area. Mathias died in Sauk Centre, Minnesota in 1884. In 1889, Peter, Joe, John, Frank and their mother, Elizabeth, along with the Keller, Liebel and Clementich families, came to North Dakota from the Crookston, Minnesota area and settled north of Foxholm, North Dakota, in a community known as Questad, an area where Lake Darling is now located.

I'm not positive Mathias is buried at St. James Cemetery, but believe it is likely. The church doesn't have a record of a burial for him, or does any other church in the area, but they say that doesn't mean he is not buried here. I have family information that says he died at Sauk Centre and is "buried at Cold Spring in a place known at that time as Jacob's Prairie".
