Boerner, Joan H. "Hendy"Passed away November 15, 2012 in the Highlands at Newcastle, Mequon, Wisconsin.
Hendy was born December 5, 1928 in Edgerton, Wisconsin to Max and Nora (Nee Johnson) Henderson. She was the great-granddaughter of Alexander Henderson who immigrated to the Wisconsin Territory from Kildrummy, Scotland in 1834. Her family moved in 1936 to Winnetka, Illinois where she graduated from New Trier High School. She attended the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and, in 1950, earned a BA degree from the School of Education with high honors. She was president of Kappa Alpha Theta, her sorority, and was one of the prettiest girls on campus. Her father paid for her college education on condition that she earn nothing below a B in her class work.
Hendy was a strong ethical person who took responsibility for herself early in life; she worked since early high school. Hendy married Roger, April 14, 1951, while he was in Law school and went with him to Oberammergau, Germany when he was called into the service. They returned to Milwaukee in 1954 where her two children, Susan and Ellen were born.
She was always reading, was good at languages and loved to dance. Hendy was a full time Mom but found time to volunteer for Junior League projects, the Genslen School and the Milwaukee Art Center. She was co-chairman of the second Lake Front Festival of Art. Starting in 1966 she traveled annually with Roger, bird watching and sight-seeing to countries all around the world. They owned a winter home in Tucson, Arizona that she enjoyed immensely. When both children were in high school or about to get out, she took a job at UWM with a Faculty Search and Screen Committee and later became an assistant to the Dean of the UWM School of Business. Hendy played social golf and tennis and, after her children were gone from the house, swam a mile a day. She had a wonderful sense of humor enjoyed a good party and loved her many friends.
In addition to her two children, Susan and Ellen, and Roger, her husband for 62 years, Hendy is survived by two grandchildren, Kelly and Michael Riordan, four nephews and nieces and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Henderson Hill, her brother-in-law, Frederick Hill and by her parents.
In Lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Milwaukee Art Museum, 700 N. Art Museum Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53202, to Friends of The Boerner Botanical Garden, 9400 Boerner Drive, Hales Corners, WI 53130 or a charity of your choice.
