Paper: Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)
Deceased: Bud Alan Spurgin formerly of Elburn
Date: July 10, 2000

A service to celebrate the life of Bud "Buddy" Alan Spurgin, 35, of Dwight, Ill., formerly of Elburn, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn.

Born Oct. 13, 1964, in St. Charles, to Bud A. and Maryann (nee Raines) Spurgin, he passed quietly away from this life into the next on Saturday, July 8, 2000, at the William W. Fox Developmental Center, where he had made his home for the past several years. Interment will be in Blackberry Cemetery following the services.

Buddy grew up in Elburn, facing many physical and mental challenges throughout his life. He was burdened with a mind that never fully developed, yet it never slowed him down. Even early in life, he possessed traits that more than compensated for any shortcomings. His heart and soul were kinder than many would imagine, he possessed great strength, and he could run like the wind. As a young man he was known for his swimming skills. Nothing could stop Buddy when he made up his mind to do something. Not even a six-foot fence could keep him in his backyard -- he loved the outdoors and it took him less than a week to find a way over and around the fence. Buddy loved to listen to Garth Brooks and country music stations, as well as easy-listening stations. As the years went by, however, the challenges became greater and more difficult. Though his body eventually gave in, his spirit never did and now lives forever in his Father's house, enjoying all the things he missed.

In the end, Buddy was Buddy, and those who really know him, loved him and will miss him dearly.

Surviving are his loving father and stepmother, Bud and Helen Spurgin of Elburn; sister, Theresa Baugher, and her children, Mary and Sarah, of Mount Morris; stepbrothers, Steven (Linda) Schmidt of Bartlett, Gary (Debbie) Schmidt, and children, Bryan Schmidt and Vanessa (Rich) Hyre, all of Longmont, Colo., and Robert (Carol) Schmidt, and family, Jessica, Janette, Jimmy and Jill, all of Aurora, Colo.; stepsisters, Marsha Schmidt (Tom Nicol) of St. Charles, Debby (Dana) Quackenbush, and daughter, Hannah, of Lily Lake, Jamie (Steve) Koz of Sugar Grove, and children, Gretchen Keith of DeKalb, Tammy (David) Cleveland of Plano, Jenni (Craig) Borneman of Yorkville and Mindy Koz of Berwyn, and Sharon (Gary) Spatafora, and children, Kristin and Megan, all of North Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maryann Spurgin, in 1964.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made in his name c/o PO Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
