Cloey was the daughter of James and Adelaide Mellisa Lewis Hazlitt. Her parents, two brothers, Henry and John, and Adelaide's parents, Harrison and Lucy Lewis, moved from Iowa to Haddam, Kansas where Cloey was born in February 1880 and died when she was only four months old.

The Hazlitts later moved to Emporia, Kansas, then to Palestine, Texas. Harrison & Lucy Lewis moved to Nebo, Benton Co, Arkansas where they remained until their deaths.

James Hazlitt died September 18, 1890 in Palestine, Texas and is buried in an overgrown, abandoned cemetery with no gravestone found for him. Adelaide remarried and moved to Florida. She died December 21, 1935 in Largo, Pinellas County, Florida and is believed to be buried in a pauper's grave there.
