Educator. Nursing Pioneer. Trained at the Nightengale Training School at Saint Thomas Hospital, she was superintendent of several English hospitals before emigrating to the United States in 1884. In 1884, she became Superintendent at the Philadelphia Almshouse at Blockley in what is now West Philadelphia. She was later Superintendent at the Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH). She established a nurse's training school at PGH on January 1, 1885. She died of heart disease in 1888. To this day, nurses in the Philadelphia area have an annual procession to her grave site at Woodlands.
