Mary Ann was born to Rose a beautiful Indian maiden of the Muck Creek Tribe,(which was assimilated by the Nisqually Tribe) and Henri Isaac Bastien, a French Canadian seller from Quebec who was given land when he arrived at Nisqually in 1844. Rose died sometime after the birth of Mary Ann, this was around the time of the Indian wars which, led to the judicial hanging of Nisqually Chief Leschi.
~~~At around 1855/56 Henri took his daughter to Victoria to the family of the Rev Edward Cridge to be raised.
~~She married Alexander Ross, son of Charles & Isabella Ross.
~They lived on the Ross Bay Family Farm in Victoria, B.C. To them were born seven children...
*Mary is said to have come upon her beloved husband Alexander dead on the side of the road from a massive heart attack so overcome with her grief she neglected the feeding of their youngest child William who was less than two weeks old and he died, to be buried beside his father.
~*~With the death of her husband Mary Ann a woman of native heritage became a land owner there are letters of administration in the B.C.Archives signed by Judge Matthew Baillie Begbie. Mary had inherited the Ross Farm.
~She married James Lascelles and they had one son together Thomas who died 4 years later.
*~*Mary was stricken with Tuberculosis, as she lay dying in 1888 her 15 year old daughter Annie went out to get more wood for the fire to help keep her mother warm. Tragically the cordwood fell upon young Annie crushing her she died later from internal injuries.
~~Her husband James Lascelles had her buried in the family plot, at Ross Bay Cemetery.She owned perpetual rights to the grave plot after the city acquired the land for the cemetery. Mary had been paid $370.21 in 1880 by the Supreme Court of B.C.
