Jazz Musician. A top-selling recording artist in the 1940s and '50s, she was notable for her percussive piano playing and distinctive vocals. Signing with Capitol Records in 1947, her first release, "Hurry On Down", became a US Top 20 hit. Lutcher's many hits included "He's a Real Gone Guy," "Fine Brown Frame," "Lake Charles Boogie" and "Can I Come in for a Second," a duet with Nat King Cole. She also recorded for the Decca, Epic and Liberty labels. In 1952, she was honored on Ralph Edwards' NBC-TV show "This Is Your Life." She performed well into her 70s and was the only African American woman to serve on the board of directors for the Musicians Union. She died of pneumonia.
