A Civil War Soldier

He served with the Fourth Iowa Infantry, Company D. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg (Mississippi), Missionary Ridge (TN), Lookout Mountain (TN), and died at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (GA).

According to the Marietta National Cemetery, since he died at Kennesaw Mountain, he more than likely was buried here. The burials didn't begin until 1866, and there are 3000 unknown soldiers buried here.

Edmund's parents were Joel Chapman Higbee (born 1792, Shelburne, VT; died 1876, Franklin, Decatur County, Iowa) and Jerusha Lockwood Higbee (born 1791, St. George, VT; died 1858, Bloomington, Decatur County, Iowa). He was the youngest of seven.
His siblings were:
- Emily Loraine (1822-c. 1903)
- Hiram Wheeler (1824-1904)
- Frederick Steuben (1827-1900); married Electa Ann Walston
- Maryann (1829-1910); married Andrew Jackson Warner
- Phebe Amoret (1831-1919)
