WIFE OF EARLY PHYSICIAN HERE CALLED TO REST

Mrs. Frances (Smith) Fitch, Widow of One of City's Early Physicians, Dr. J.C. Fitch, Succumbs to Infirmities of Age at Home of Daughter in Ohio. Came Here With Husband in 1870.

Mrs. Frances Fitch, a resident of this city for many years and the widow of the late Dr. Julius Clinton Fitch, one of the early medical practitioners of Hastings passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wells L. Griswold, in Youngstown, Ohio, last Saturday at the age of 84 years, death resulting from natural infirmities. Mrs. Fitch had been making her home with her daughter since the death of Dr. Fitch about seven years ago.

She came to Hastings from Illinois with her husband in 1870, a few years after their marriage, and the greater part of her life was subsequently spent here.

Mrs. Fitch was the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Nathaniel Smith of Linden, Ill. She was born in that city December 3, 1843 and spent her early girlhood there. Her father made his home here with his daughter for many years following the death of his wife.

Mrs. Fitch was an active member of the Presbyterian Church here and an ardent worker in any cause that appeared to be beneficial to her church and community. She was one of the earliest members of the Chautauqua Society of Chautauqua, N. Y., graduating from the course in 1888 and receiving her diploma after going through the "Golden Gate" at Chautauqua in 1921.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Griswold, three grandchildren, and two great grand-daughters, and one brother, G. Hale Smith of Florence, Ala.

Funeral services for the esteemed lady were held Monday afternoon at the Griswold home in Youngstown and the remains were then brought to Hastings where services and interment were conducted at Lakeside cemetery Wednesday morning, Rev. L.O. Lee, Presbyterian pastor, officiating.
