John was the 4th child in a family of 8 children.
His Father, Samuel Ashurst was born in 1864 in Wigan, Lancashire, England. He came with his mother and five sisters to Pennsylvania in August 1880 to meet their father who had come from England in 1879.
His Mother, Harriet Bergin was born in 1867 in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. She came with her sister to Pennsylvania in 1884.
On both his father's and mother's sides his grandfathers were coal miners, first in England and then in the United States.
John grew up in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, and moved to Ohio as a young adult.
On December 19, 1917 he enlisted in the National Guard in Akron, Ohio. His address at that time was 69 Straw St., in Akron, Ohio. He was first assigned to the 306th Company at Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was transferred to Battery E, 64th Artillery, C.A.C. on January 16, 1918. Promoted to Private First Class June 1, 1918. He sailed to France July 14, 1918. Returned to The United States February 24, 1919. He was Honorably discharged on April 11, 1919 and returned home.
John married Helen Josephine Deubel, the daughter of John and Agnes (Ley) Deubel in July, 1921.
They had three daughters; Maxine Marilyn, Shirley Eileen, and Bonita Hope "Bonnie".
He worked for The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.
He liked baseball and hunting and belonged to the Moose Lodge in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
