Private, Co. E, 18th Massachusetts Infantry
The son of John and Mary (Winsor) Alden, and brother of Henry Alden, Co. E, 18th Mass. Infantry.
He married Mary W. Brewster, the daughter of Daniel W. and Polly (Hall), on May 10, 1841 at Duxbury, MA. They were the parents of John W. (1842-1846); Sylvanus A. (1845-1846); John W. born May 24, 1847; and Frank R. (1854-1904).
John was a 48 year-old Mariner from Duxbury when he enlisted in that town on May 23, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. E. He became ill prior to the Regiment leaving for Washington, DC on August 28, 1861 and returned to his home in Duxbury.
