James was a descendant of William Lingo (d. 1728), who emigrated from County Fife, Scotland to the Eastern Shore of Virginia about 1685. James moved with his parents and siblings from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, to Hamilton County, Ohio in 1810.

James married Elizabeth in Hamilton County, Ohio on 3 December 1824. He moved his family to Washington County, Iowa between 1836 and 1840, where he farmed until his death. He and Elizabeth had at least nine children: Milton, Henry, Caleb, Mary Jane, James, Sarah Frances, Cawsay, Margaret and Fabious.

He is believed to be buried in Riverside Cemetery, as are close family members from that period. There is no marker visible.
