He died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad. He was on his second deployment in Iraq. Among his military awards and decorations were the Hawaii Medal of Honor; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantryman Badge; Purple Heart; and Bronze Star Medal.

He was survived by his parents; two sisters; a brother-in-law; a brother; his paternal grandfather; his paternal grandmother; a niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Interment on December 14, 2006.
