Jim was born on November 19, 1938, in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late James Harry and Gertrude Brogan Campbell.
After graduating from Wilmington High School in 1956, Jim was a member of the Wilmington Police Department for 22 years, rising to the rank of sergeant. After retiring from the police department, he spent 10 years in the security division of J. P. Morgan Chase. He also was an eight-year veteran of the Delaware National Guard.
Jim was a longtime resident and dedicated board member of the Beach Cove Resort, the family's vacation home at North Myrtle Beach, SC. He also was a board member of the Delaware Anglers and Gunners Club, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police No. 1.
Clad in baggy pants and his trademark suspenders, a can of Pepsi not far away, Jim was in his glory creating wood crafts in his extensive shop. He and his wife, Joann, had a large following at regional craft shows with Campbell Crafts one of the most popular stops at the shows. Nothing, however, took the place of Jim's passion and love for animals. There was his beloved cat Inky, his constant companion and grand dogs Owen, Frankie and Lilly who had a special place in his heart, as did Mollie the cat.
Even on days when he wasn't feeling up to par, nothing rejuvenated Jim more than climbing aboard his big John Deere tractor and cutting the grass around his sprawling property.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Joann P. Campbell, and his wife's daughters, whom he considered his own, Lisa P. Velasco of Bethany Beach, DE, Lori P. Yanez and husband, Nelson of Middletown, Tina P. Velasco Greer and husband, Fred of Bear, DE; and grandchildren, Jessica Yanez, Amanda Yanez and Austin Greer. He is also survived by two children from his first marriage, Sharon Syverson and James. J. Campbell II; sister, Elizabeth Sylwestrzuk and nephew, Keith Sylwestrzuk.
