The daughter of Robert and Eleanor Randall, Matilda was born and raised as the daughter of a Methodist preacher in rural Pulaski County, Kentucky. Following the Civil War, she married Union veteran James Harvey Parkey. As he had with all his children, Robert Randall deeded Matilda and James 200 acres, between the northern prong of Whetstone Creek and what is now known as Parkey Ridge.

Matilda had 12 children, and lived in Pulaski County her entire life. She was a Methodist.
