Victim of "Domestic Violence"

Daughter of Guy Raymond Hogle and Nancy Ellen (Landis) Hogle 1 of 5 sibling: twins - Walter and Wallace Hogle, Edward Hogle, Peggy Grace (Hogle) Walker and Viola Houck (Hogle) Floyd.

Home in 1910: Home in 1910: MT Vernon Ward 3, Knox County, Ohio

At 13 years old - Elsie and the Hogle children did their Patriotic Duty and joined the Red Cross of Mt. Vernon, OH. The Family was very poor, and the Red Cross letter thanks them for their sacrifice. Also, a letter came form a WWI Soldier stationed in France, a friend of the Family - who read the children's story in the newspaper overseas. The original letter is her as a testimonial. 1918.

Elsie married a Samuel Bertolet in Mt. Vernon, OH and they had 1 child Bernard Bertolet.

Elsie was murdered by her husband at 20 yrs old - Sam made her drink Carbolic Acid and it killed her. We were told how it melted the skin from her mouth and down her throat. He was an alcoholic and insanely jealous and abusive when he drank! Her obituary stated she committed suicide but the Family stated this was not true. The obituary also stated she had a baby girl - but she had a baby boy. This left Baby Bernie Boy - as my Granny Viola Floyd recalled with tears, an orphan. It was as though Sam vanished off of the face of the earth. Fifty years later I was told by my Grandfather "Don't bother looking for him- they'll never find him".

The entire Hogle Family loaded up and moved west with Elsie's baby boy Bernie and moved to Yukon, OK. Bernie Boy was raised by his Hogle Grand-parents and the Aunts & Uncles all cared for him. They moved to Lancaster, TX. and eventually out west to Phoenix, AZ.

Bernie grew up in Phoenix, AZ. and died there as well. he had heart trouble. I recall they stripped the veins out of his legs and he was in so much pain then - back in early 70's.. we all prayed for him. His heart finally failed. God Bless Bernie Boy and he joined his Dear Mother Angel Elsie who had been stolen from him his whole lifetime.

Thank you to Find A Grave contributor Carol Neely Patterson (46886585) for adding my Great-Aunt Elsie's obituary. Thank you for adding the notation as told to me by my Granny - Viola Houck Hogle Floyd - Elsie's sister - "Polite-Society" could not handle the MURDER of this beautiful young Mother - so calling it suicide "looked better". 100 years ago that was possible - to harm or murder someone and "cover it up" and get away with it. I am writing this entry November 29, 2020 - and today's Forensic Science would not allow this "Polite Society" diversion. Yes - my Granny, and Elsie's parents, siblings and her son were simply forgotten when they moved away and "Polite Society" would allow the killer to remarry and have other children. It appears that he was not a good husband or father the second time around either.

Kindly respect Dear Great-Aunt Elsie's Memorials:
