Born in Randolph County, North Carolina where he resided as a teacher prior to enlisting in Company F, 46th North Carolina Troops at the age of 23. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on March 1, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 16, 1862. Promoted to Captain on March 26, 1863. Present or accounted for until March-April 1863 when he was reported absent without leave. Reported absent sick in May-June 1863. Returned to duty in September-October 1863. Present or accounted for until he was killed at or near Globe Tavern, Virginia on or about August 21-22, 1864.
