Dr. Harry E. Mauk, Chiropractic Physician, passed away early Saturday afternoon, July 24, 2010, at Heartland of Marion.
Dr. Mauk was born on January 3, 1925 in Youngwood, PA. He was the son of the late William and Muriel Mauk.
Dr. Mauk graduated from Kenton High School in 1942. He then served in the U.S. Navy as a Radio/Electronics Specialist (aboard a Destroyer) between December 1942 and January 1946. The Destroyer he was aboard was the only one of nine that returned home from the Invasion of Normandy.
After his discharge from the Naval Service, Dr. Mauk then attended the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, graduating in 1951. Dr. Mauk chose the chiropractic profession as a result of being relieved of a chronic back injury through chiropractic care and also his subsequent desire to serve his fellow man.
Dr. Mauk started his practice in Marion in May, 1951 where he compassionately served his Community until his retirement in 1993. He was joined in practice by his two sons Dr. Gary in 1973 and Dr. David in 1981. Drs. Gary and David presently practice together at 1036 Mt. Vernon Avenue.
Dr. Mauk was very active in various State and National Professional Associations. He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and Ohio State Chiropractic Association (OSCA). He was on the Board of Directors of the OSCA for 15 years, serving as Chairman of the Public Relations Committee for 12 years. He was also President of the OSCA for 2 years.
Dr. Mauk was very active in the Marion Community. He was a member of the Marion Chamber of Commerce; The President of the 20/30 Club; Marion County Historical Society; President of The Edward Huber Memorial Association. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church where he served on many Committees. He is presently a member of Crosswood United Methodist Church.
Dr. Mauk loved sports and could be found on the Pleasant football sidelines on Friday nights. He volunteered as the team doctor. While serving as team doctor, he also enjoyed watching his three sons play! He had the pleasure of serving Pleasant as team doctor for over 20 years. A highlight of his Pleasant sideline career came in 1973. After Pleasant won the State Football Championship, Dr. Mauk was chased around the football field until the players caught him and then poured gallons of water over him in CELEBRATION!
Dr. Mauk had a love of history and developed a highly entertaining series of portrayals and
presentations of President Harding, Edward Huber, Thomas Jefferson, Longfellow, John D. Rockefeller, Henry True and Eber Baker. He gave over 75 presentations.
Dr. Harry Mauk dedicated his life to his family and to his profession. He is greatly loved and will be truly missed.
Dr. Mauk leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Norma (Birchem) Mauk. They were united in marriage on June 22, 1946. He also leaves behind a daughter, Sandra (Jerry) Yager; sons Dr. Gary (Colleen) Mauk, Dr. David (Kim) Mauk and Tim (Vickie) Mauk, all of Marion; grandchildren (14) - Joe, Jim (Iantha), Jeremy and Justin Yager; Heather (Eric) Muhlenthaler, Amber (Todd) Korn and Dustin Mauk; Whitney, Tiffany and Tyler Mauk; Brittany Mullins, Bailee, Jaden and Parkar Mauk; great-grandchildren (7) - Alysia Yager and Chelsea (Alan) Wrobel; Casey and Kara Muhlenthaler; Logan and Ryder Korn; Addison Mullins; great-great-grandchild - Jace Wrobel. Dr. Mauk leaves behind many special and dear friends. Dr. Mauk also leaves behind a great companion, his dog Romeo, with whom he found great joy and comfort.
