MARGARET ELIZABETH DINGMAN IBARRA
Aug. 28, 1927 - May 6, 2004.
My mother was born on August 28, 1927, the daughter of Morgan and Mable (Edgerton) Dingman, in Canajoharie, New York. When she was about seven years, the family moved to Palatine Bridge, where she attended school and later moved to Nelliston.
Mom, along with her sister Alice worked for the Beech Nut Company, in Canajoharie, a job she enjoyed. Margaret and her sister Alice walked to work, she described the area including the Methodist church they had to walk past and the bridge they walked over. Margaret attended Sunday School at the Methodist church there. When I visited the area in 2002, I visited the small, beautiful church and walked over the same bridge she used to cross on foot.
Margaret married Serafin Sandoval Ibarra on October 6, 1945 in St. Johnsville, New York and they were married for almost 47 years when Serafin passed away in 1992.
Margaret was a wonderful mother, raising seven children; always putting her children first, raising them with lots of love and respect. Margaret actually had ten children, her first pregnancy ended when she was about three months pregnant. Margaret had three sons all born a little over a year from each other. Margaret's fifth pregnancy ended when she was five months pregnant, a little boy which she got to hold. When Margaret was seven months pregnant with her next child, Margaret was going down the steps of her home while it was raining, she slipped and fell which caused her to go into premature labor. Stephen Richard was soon born and survived for 24 hours. Margaret mourned for her three children, taken so soon from her. When Margaret became pregnant again, she hope for a baby girl and she got her baby girl, for that was when I was born. Margaret and Serafin were thrilled to have a baby girl, although she would have been happy with a baby boy. Margaret would go on to have three more girls.
With seven children to care for, Margaret became a stay at home mother. She loved cooking, sewing, keeping her home clean. While her children were in school, she would care for other people's children and save the money she earned to buy many gifts for her children at Christmas.
Mom loved to sing and in her younger days was so good at singing she was encouraged to sing professionally which she didn't pursue because she wanted to get married instead. While growing up, we always heard Mom singing as she did her housework. She sang Patriotic songs, country songs, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers songs (her favorite singers), lots of songs from the 40's, current songs on the radio. Mom enjoyed all kinds of music. Mom also had a very large record collection.
Mom loved to cook Mexican food, she made delicious fried beans and chile con carne, and her flour tortillas were so good, the best the family has ever tasted. My brother Robert and I made sure we were at Mom and Dad's house for breakfast when Mom made her chili con carne egg scramble which was delicious. Mom & Dad even made tamales at Christmas time. I loved her home made raisin coffee cake, it was so good.
Mom loved being surrounded by her family, we would all sit around the kitchen table, talking, laughing, eating and having a good time. Mom loved to share stories with us about her childhood, growing up in New York.
Mom, Dad and the family lived in numerous places; first in California, than in Arizona and moved back to California in 1967 and have lived here since. Mom and Dad also lived in Nelliston, New York and Tijuana, Mexico.
Mom will always be loved and missed by her family. Her strength was an inspiration to her family. Her daughters had two nicknames they had given their mother; "Pretty Blue Eyes" and "Beautiful Mom". Indeed, she was the most beautiful mom to us.
