Willard Abbott
Maj. Willard Abbott was for many years a resident of Cleveland, prominent in
business circles and an honored veteran of the Civil War. He was born March
29, 1838, at Burma, India, where his father Elisha Litchifield Abbott was a
missionary. He was brought back to America in early childhood, was liberally
educated, and in the flower of his young manhood enlisted in August 1862 at
Rochester, NY. in the Thirteenth NY Regiment. Nov 10, 1862 he was promoted to
the rank of captain, was with his regiment in some of the most bitterly fought
battles and campaigns of the war. He was once wounded in the face and again
in the body. His services earned him before the war was over the rank of
major. After the war he was always interested in military organizations and
military affairs. He located in Rochester after his marriage and in
Cincinnati for a number of years and later came to Cleveland. In 1867 he
married Miss Caroline Younglove, daughter of Moses C. Younglove, a prominent
pioneer Cleveland businessman. In the fall of 1906 he went to Hanover, New
Hampshire, and illness prevented him from returning to Cleveland. He died in
Hanover February 24, 1907 at the age of seventy years. He was laid to rest in
Lakeview cemetery beside his wife who died Feb 24 1903. There were seven
children in the family of which 3 survive: Frank E. Abbott in the real estate
business at Cleveland.Gardner Abbott, formerly a Cleveland attorney and now a
major with the American armies in France; and Homer E. Keyer of Hanover New
