Pfc. Andrew J. Shields of Battle Ground, Washington was a 2007 Battle Ground High School graduate where he was a former track and football athlete. He also attended Portland State University. Drew was a former member of the Clark County Fire & Rescue cadet program, where he was appointed a battalion chief shortly after joining the program his senior year. He joined the Army while still in high school, graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., attended the combat medic course at Fort Sam Houston and then attended basic airborne school at Fort Benning, Ga. He knew what he wanted to do in life, and that was fight for the company and be an airborne medic. He is the son of Clark County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Shields, a patrol deputy. Drew was currently serving as an Army combat medic and airborne paratrooper, had been in Afghanistan for only about two months when he was killed at age 19. It had been only a month earlier that he had visited his former classmates and cadets at the high school before deploying to Afghanistan, urging them to keep their eyes on their goals.
