"Once he found out about the baby, he was devoted to it," said Fite's girlfriend, Kristen McCall of Kings Mountain.
Fite, who lived in south Gastonia, died in a car wreck at the intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard and Lakewood Road early Saturday morning.
The driver of the other vehicle, Kimberly Monique Smith, 31, of Gastonia, is facing driving while impaired, second-degree murder, felony death by vehicle, reckless driving to endanger, failing to stop at a red light and felony serious injury by vehicle.
"The first day, I was mad," said Fite's mother, Sherry Pineda.
Now, she said, she is not so angry.
"I would like to hug her and let her know she is forgiven," said Pineda.
Friends and family gathered at Pineda's house Tuesday morning, to go through old photographs and share memories.
"He touched a lot of lives in so many ways," Pineda said.
Some memories brought laughter and some brought tears.
McCall was reminded about how Fite would try to kiss her 100 times a day. The memory put a smile on her face, but that smile turned to tears as she said, "I forgot all about that."
The thing they remembered most was his love for music.
At the age of 12, Fite learned how to play guitar by listening to Jimi Hendrix. He always found a way to express how he felt through poetry and music, his family said.
"It was so beautiful," Pidena said.
Fite had two brothers and one sister.
"He was just so sweet and tender," said his 17-year-old sister Kayla Fite.
McCall said if the child is a boy, she is going to name him Daniel in honor of his father.
"He was a good friend, anytime you needed to talk to him, he would listen," Pidena said.

Fite was the passenger in Michael Johnson's, car.
"They just went to get hamburgers," said Johnson's mother, Grace Johnson.
Johnson, 23, remains at Gaston Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He is still in a coma, on a respirator and has pneumonia, according to Grace Johnson.
She said he opened his eyes for the first time Tuesday.
"He's not really responsive to commands," she said. "They can't tell me if he's going to be all right."
Johnson and Fite met 10 years ago when they lived in the same neighborhood at Creekside. Many described them as brothers.
"They were so similar," Grace Johnson said.
