Poet. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was the first of Surrealism's literary precursors. He wrote under the name Comte de Lautréamont. In 1870, he published a volume of poetry, "Poésies." He is best known for his other work, "Les Chants de Maldoror," a nightmarish poem replete with grotesque, often erotic, imagery. He died in Paris, France and was buried in a mass grave in Cimetière de Montmartre.
