He was influenced as a film maker by the French New Wave, and by Hollywood. Jacques was the husband of fellow director Agnès Varda, whose Jacquot de Nantes, a film version of his autobiographical notebooks, is a loving account of his childhood and his lifelong love of theatre and cinema. Jacques himself appears in the film in the opening and closing sequences, and at several points throughout. He and Agnès had two children. Jacques enjoyed directing musicals or movies involving musical numbers. His best films are often relationships between dreams and reality. He is best known for The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967). He died of AIDS at the age of 59.
