WALLACE D. MC CORMACK PORTAGE, IN
Wallace D. "Wally" McCormack, a Portage resident since 1958, formerly of Miller. Wally is safe at home in heaven at the age of 89. Wally was a graduate of Emerson High School and president of the class of 1938. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served aboard the USS Brookings in the South Pacific. Returning home, he became an appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration for two decades. Wally was a well known sports official. He spent most of his years as a player and official developing an abiding love for life. His philosophy was simple: Faith, hope and love, with love being the most important. They are the ingredients he felt made life as meaningful as Jimmy Stewart learned in "It's a Wonderful Life," which became Wally's motto for many years. Wally felt, all things considered, life really was wonderful. Wally was instrumental in starting the Portage Little League and was manager of Mac's AC, Portage's first and most successful youth baseball team. He was a member of the legendary "Club 25" state championship fast pitch softball team and was inducted into the State Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in Terre Haute on March 26, 1995. He was also a member of the Indiana Lutheran Basketball Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in Richmond, Indiana. Wally was past president and a lifetime member of the Calumet Athletic Officials Association, active member of Club Deb/Club 30, the Gary Old-Timers, and the famous Horace Mann Breakfast Club. An avid golfer and fisherman, Wally could often be found on the links or on Rainy Lake in Canada. Wally served as an observer of officials for the IHSAA and Valparaiso University. He was a long time host of "Wally's World" television show where he touched the lives of the great and near great with his ready smile, positive attitude, and home-spun philosophy. Left to celebrate the blessings of a wonderful and long life are sons: Paul of Portage, Bruce (Dee) of Benzonia, MI, Kevin (Susan) of Fuquay Varina, NC; and daughter, Kathleen (Bill) Rogers of Valparaiso; as well as his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Wally is also survived by his beloved companion, Anne Smar of Merrillville. He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Hilda; sisters: Evelyn and Margie; his son, Michael; his wife and mother of his children, Ruth Lindstrom; and wife, Dorothy Miller. This world is full of folks, 'tis true, but Wally, there was only one of you. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 6540 Central Ave., Portage, IN with Rev. Frederick Hoover officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave., Portage, IN.
