Son of Joseph Bannan and Mary Jane McElvaney Bannan of James' Green, Kilkenny, Ireland.

His father was a Sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary [the then Irish Police Force]. By 1911 he had retired and was an estate agent.

James Charles Bannan enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 18 November 1914, at Medicine Hat, Alberta.
He gave his date of birth as 24 February 1893.
He named his father James Bannan of James Green, Kilkenny as his next-of-kin.

His military record notes that he previously served for 3 years with the South Irish Horse.
He was promoted to Lance-Corporal on 7 Dec. 1914.
He embarked for England, 29 May 1915.
He was absent without leave for 34 hours whilst in Kent, and forfeited 2 days pay.
He was subsequently reduced in rank to private.
His battalion left for France on 18 Sept. 1915


His name is included in the
St. Matthew's Church War Memorial
Irishtown, Dublin.
