Elihu's father died when both of them were quite young. It had been impossible to determine his lineage with the scant materials earlier available. Finally, through the combined efforts of descendants of Elihu and of collateral family members, his lineage has been established. Starting with only several letters to Elihu that had been preserved within the family of a descendant, New York State land and probate records ultimately allowed the identification of his family. If you would like more information than is given in the synopsis below, please contact the manager of this memorial.

Elihu has been identified as the son of Ransom Dennis (born in or between 1785 and 1790; died aft 1819 and before 8 Oct 1829, probably in or near USA, NY, Oswego, Scriba) and Eliza (Potter) Dennis (born in or between 1795 and 1804; died after 1819 and before 19 Sep 1825, probably in or near USA, NY, Oswego, Scriba). Ransom has been found in only two source records: the 1820 US census for USA, NY, Oswego, Scriba; and the will of his grandfather, Thomas Dennis. Ransom and Eliza's burial places are unknown, although USA, NY, Oswego County, is highly likely.

Ransom was the son of Elihu Dennis (born 22 Apr 1766 in Colonial America, now USA, MA, Bristol, Dartmouth; died before 10 Nov 1812 in USA, NY, Washington, Easton) and Fanny (perhaps Frances) (Coon) Dennis (born in or between 1771 and 1780, died after 15 Jan 1836). Elihu appears in the 1800 US census for USA, NY, Rensselaer, Schaghticoke. Neither Elihu or Fanny's burial place has been located, although they are likely buried in or near USA, NY, Washington, Easton.

Elihu was the son of Thomas Dennis and Hannah (Wilcox) Dennis.

Gravesite Details

Marker and gravesite could not be located in Sep 2017. Weeds and brush were very high and thick.

Thanks to Find-a-Grave Member # 48805570 for the new photos, which show a cleaned-up cemetery, and to whoever did this work!
