Bernard J. Atkins
Bernard Julian Atkins, 85, of 4286 Oak Level Rd., Bassett, died Thursday, Aug.4, 2005.
Born July 18, 1920, in Bassett, Atkins was the son of the late Lewis E. Atkins and Lavinie Mitchell Atkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ferrell E. Atkins and half-sisters, Blanch Bellecci and Margaret Benson.
Atkins served in the Navy Armed Guard during World War II as a gunner's mate on the SS William H. Moody and the SS Pocahantas. He later was a retired supervisor from American of Martinsville. Atkins also was a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and in the Fellowship Sunday School class and Senior adult group.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mabel Spencer Atkins of the home; a son, B. Jerry Atkins of Bassett; a brother, James C. "Jack" Atkins of Richmond; one grandchild; one step-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at Fort Trial Baptist Church with Dr. Joey McNeill and the Rev. James Alsop officiating. A burial with military honors will be in Henry Memorial Park.
The family received friends Saturday and at other times at the home.
