Clifford W. Eiche, 96, Atchison, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Medicalodge. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sumner Cemetery, south of Atchison, with the Rev. Dave Culver, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Sunner Cemetery and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Eiche worked with his father and brother on a truck garden farm in the Sumner Community. He and his brother, Bruce Eiche, continued with the gardening until Bruce Eiche's death and Clifford Eiche's retirement in 1979. The Eiche Brothers sold their vegetables at the ATchison City Market at Sixth and Main Streets until it turned into a parking lot after the 1958 flood. They then continued to sell their crops under the Sixth Street viaduct.
He was born May 2, 1901, on the Eiche farm in the Sumner Community, the son of William and Nettie Sandfort Eiche. He attended school at the Sumner Elementary School No. 9.
Mr. Eiche was a member of the Suner School Board for many years, a Walnut Township trustee and active on the board of Sumner Cemetery.
He married Claudia Fleiner on March 12, 1921. They lived in the Sumner Community until 1988 when they moved into Mall Towers. They moved to Atchison Medicalodge in 1992. She died July 17, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his son, George Eiche, on May 23, 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Joe Mier, Atchison; a son,Carl Eiche, Frankfort, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
