INDEPENDENCE - Janice M. Alford, 62, Independence, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Sedan, the daughter of W.T. and Mae M. Bohannon Wiggins.

She grew up and attended school in Sedan.

She had been employed through the years at Penny Lane, Extra Special, Shoes by Cotterill and Independence State Bank.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and on numerous committees. She enjoyed animals and was a volunteer with AWOL of Independence.

On Feb. 6, 1955, she married Gerald Dean Alford in Coffeyville. He survives.

Other survivors include her mother, Mae M. Wiggins, Caney; three sons, Michael Dean Alford and Douglas Kirk Alford, both of Independence, and Gerald Scott Alford of rural Logan, Iowa; a daughter, Lori Ann Oldweiler of rural Altoona; a brother, William Leon Wiggins, Caney; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Independence, led by the Rev. Jim Blocher. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Independence, the American Cancer Society or AWOL and may be left with the funeral home.

Potts Chapel, Independence, is in charge of arrangements.
