A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of twenty and mustered into state service at Hummelstown, Dauphin County, September 17, 1862, as a private with the Graeff Independent Company, and honorably discharged with the company September 23, 1862.
2. Enlisted at the correctly stated age of twenty in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his his company November 6, 1864.
Described in his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent as "a large man weighing 235 pounds," he died from the effects of a late night fall down the stairway of Harrisburg's Central Hotel. He reportedly died instantly with no discernible injury marks found on his body. The obituary makes no mention of alcohol involvement. Ironically, it was the second time he had fallen down the same stairway, the first fall only rendering him unconscious.
