The son of Samuel & Harriet (Stober) Frantz, in 1850 he was living with his family in Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer John Brown in Dickinson Township, Cumberland County.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Dauphin County July 1, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 2 as a private with Co. E, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1863. Note that by omitting "Militia," the tombstone lists to the wrong regiment.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864. He is in the company register and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Edwin."

He married Emma H. Hummel ca. 1866 (September 3, 1865, also reported) and fathered William Seymour (b. 06/23/66), Allen R. (b. 03/??/71, 72. or 73 - all reported), and Daniel Edgar (b. 03/23/74). Cause of his death is listed as "chronic nephritis interstitial" with "myocardial degeneration" a contributing factor.

Both the 1850 and 1860 censuses list his birth year as 1844 with all numerated prior to his birthday. His second stated age at enlistment complies with that birth year. Given that twenty-year-olds are disinclined to understate their ages, it is possible the 1843 birth year on the tombstone should be 1844. However, all other censuses point to 1843.

Obituary published in the Patriot (Harrisburg, PA) Monday 13 Mar 1916. Summary: Died Friday night (10th or the llth depending if it was after midnight). Veteran of Civil war. Served in a Pennsylvania volunteer regiment under David Hummel. Member of Citizen Fire Co., Steelton Lodge, I.O.O.F., Steelton Council, Order of Independent Americans and Sergeant Lascomb Post. G. A. R. Survived by his wife and two sons, Allen R., of Waynesboro, and Daniel R., of the borough.
