The son of William & Lydia Rebecca (Davis) Boyles, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Cumberland County June 20, 1863, overstating his age by two years, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 26 as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service there May 4 as a private with Co. I, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Adeline Lauer in 1866 and fathered the children you see linked below. Cause of his death is listed as "cardiac dilatation" with "central pneumonia" a contributing factor.
