The son of Michael & Mary Gerberich, in 1850 and 1860 he was living with Thomas P. & Elizabeth Gerberich. In 1860, he was a saddler and farmer living in East Hanover Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, October 3, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 26 as a private with Co. H, 76th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged November 17, 1864, to date October 26, 1864. He was shot in the hand, but which hand and the date and location of where he suffered the wounding require additional research.

In 1870, he lived with his mother in Hummelstown. To this point, no evidence of a marriage has emerged.
