The son of John & Mary Elizabeth (Zimmerman) Brighton, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living in Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes. He is in the 1860 census by his middle name.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service with five regiments:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. E, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863. At muster-out, he was charged for lost haversack, canteen, knapsack, and metallic scales.
2. Enlisted in Millersville, Lancaster County, June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 4 as a corporal with Co. H, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 22, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry). On May 31, 1864, with the impending dissolution of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, he transferred to Co. F, 190th Pennsylvania Infantry, to complete his term of service, then due to an as yet unknown infirmity transferred to Co. K, 22nd Veteran Reserve Corps. He honorably discharged per special order July 28, 1865, at Camp Dennison, Ohio.

He married Julia Ann Jacobs ca. 1864 and fathered Harry J. (b. 11/13/65), Charles W. (b. 10/15/66), John Henry (b. @1867), Elmer T. (b. 02/15/68), Emma Elwood (b. 08/30/72 - married Harry Forney Bashore), George Parker (b. 04/17/75), William Jacob (b. 04/10/78), and Anna (b. 09/23/84 - married James Walter Snoke). Cause of his death is listed as "arteriosclerosis."
