The son of John & Mary (Hoffer [?]) Horning (per his death certificate;; George & Barbara also reported), he married Lovinia or Louisa (their children's death certificates report both multiple times) Sweigart in 1858, fathering Mary (b. @1859), John (b. 05/21/61), Catherine (b. @1866), Louisa (b. 1868), Martin L. (b. 03/18/70), Louisa Sweigart (b. 09/21/70 or 71 - married Harry Meshey Charleston), Franklin W. (b. 07/14/74), Henry S. "Harry" (b. 06/27/77), and Elizabeth (b. 04/??/82). In 1860, he was living with his family in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 20, 1864, as a private with Battery F, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery (43rd Pa). On December 29, 1864, he transferred to Battery A, and honorably discharged June 15, 1865. He is found in the company descriptive list without any personal data.

In 1870, he was living with his family in Royalton, Dauphin County, in 1880, in Newville, Lancaster County, in 1890 was residing in West Donegal Township, Lancaster County, but by 1900 was back in Royalton. He died at Harrisburg City Hospital from "hypostatic congestion of lungs" with a "fracture of head of left femur due to a fall" a contributing factor.

He may not have been born in 1839. The 1860 census lists him as a twenty-four-year-old, 1870 says thirty-four, 1880 claims forty-three, 1900 lists sixty-three, and 1910 asserts seventy-one, the latter being the only census entry supporting an 1839 birth year.
